The statue was erected in 1886 as a memorial to the deaths of 329 men of the 66th Berkshire Regiment at the Battle of Maiwand in Afghanistan. The sculptor was George Blackall Simonds. An erroneous myth persists in Reading that Simonds later committed suicide because he believed that the stance of the lion was anatomically incorrect.
